What Is Reflexology?
Reflexology ~ is an ancient healing art combined with modern knowledge and science to activate the natural healing energies of the body. Reflexology uses the application of pressure to the feet and hands to affect other part of the body.
The Roots of Reflexology
The roots of this gentle and effective technique reach back as far as 4000 BC. Illustrations, artifacts and texts show that forms of hand and foot reflexology were practiced in China, Japan and at the same time in Egypt.
North American Indian Tribes also used a form of foot therapy for hundreds of years.
Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) is the pioneer of modern Reflexology. She mapped the feet with the corresponding organs and systems of the body. She discovered that alternating pressure on various points had great therapeutic effects.
How Does Reflexology Work?
The common aspect of ancient and modern reflexology is the long-established factor that energy zones run through the body and that reflex areas or points in the hands and feet correspond with the major organs, glands, systems and body parts.
The theory explaining reflexology is called zone theory and is similar to the idea of the meridians in acupuncture: Meridians, zone charts and maps connect hands and feet to organs and structures of the body.
Reflexology maps show the various reflex areas on hand or feet and their corresponding body part. The mirror image of the body in the feet helps to target the correct part on which to work on.
Stimulation of sensory nerve endings sends information to the spinal cord and the brain. The brain carries the message to relax to the organs and muscles. During a treatment more than 7000 nerve endings are being stimulated by touching the feet!
The Possibilities of Reflexology
- Reflexology is one of the ways to maintain a healthy balance for your body.
- Regular treatments help to keep the natural energy flowing in all your organs and systems.
- Research shows that reflexology is a proven modality for preventative care.
BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology reduces stress & creates a sense of relaxation.
Stress is an everyday aspect of life. It can have good and bad sides. Stress becomes a problem if we don’t manage it well especially the stress that results from problems, worry, overwork and frustration.
The body defenses break down and we are more vulnerable to illness and disease. Reflexology reduces stress by creating a deep sense of relaxation and peace that helps the body to regain its balance.
Reflexology Improves Your Circulation!
Tension and stress influence the cardiovascular system and tighten the blood vessels. Circulation becomes restricted and oxygen and nutrients cannot reach the cells easily.
Waste products and toxins removal becomes sluggish. Reflexology relaxes the cardiovascular vessels and allows the oxygen rich blood to flow naturally again.
Reflexology helps cleanse your body of toxins.
By stimulating the lymphatic, excretory and integumentary system (lymph-nodes, kidneys, colon and the skin) the built-in mechanism for cleansing of the body is reactivated and enhanced.
Reflexology balances & revitalizes your mind body system.
The thousands of parts and systems in the body are supposed to be working together in harmony. If one area is out of balance the whole body is affected.
With a reflexology tune-up we can bring back homeostasis, meaning perfect dynamic balance.
Reflexology is an effective form of preventative care
Stress, sleep deprivation, hormone imbalances, poor water & air quality and low food quality create a strain for the immune system.
Reflexology serves as a proven form of maintenance for the body by creating balance through relaxation and nurturing touch.
